Aside

Faith Is

Thousands of strangers hold you up before breakfast.

faith is the car starting.

faith is the car starting. faith is your eyes opening. faith is the floor. faith is gravity, and not checking. faith is the stranger who built the thing, the stranger who packed the thing, the stranger who carried the thing across an ocean, in the dark, while you slept. faith is. not just in prayer.

a cup of coffee

you trusted every one of them this morning, and you never once thought about it.

the audit

Pick up anything near you. Genuinely, anything.

Somebody designed it. Somebody else specified the material, and somebody extracted that material out of the ground in a country you probably could not place on a map under time pressure. Somebody ran the machine that formed it. Somebody inspected it and had a bad day and inspected it anyway. Somebody boxed it. Somebody drove it to a port at four in the morning. Somebody crossed an ocean with it. Somebody unloaded it. Somebody stocked the shelf.

Not one of those people knows you exist. Every one of them had to not fail for that object to be in your hand.

Fact

You are held up, continuously, by an enormous number of strangers, none of whom you have verified.

Feeling

Once you actually see it, it is difficult to look at a room the same way.

What I thought it meant

I do not think this proves God. I want to be clear about that, because it is a tempting move and it is not a valid one.

What I learned later

What it did was remove my excuse. I had been saying I was not a person of faith, and it turned out I was doing it constantly and had simply never priced it. The question was never whether I had faith. It was only ever where I was putting it.

faith is.
not just in prayer.

Everyone in this story except me is unnamed — her, a friend, my father, someone. It is my story to tell and theirs to keep. Names are not hidden in the page source either; they were never written down.
