Chapter 17

One question. The answer is in the chapter before this one.

Chapter 17

Jealousy

Feelings are real. Feelings are not facts.

Then there was somebody else.

I am going to be extremely careful in this chapter, and the care is not politeness. It is accuracy. Almost everything I felt during this period was built on almost nothing that I knew, and that gap is the entire lesson.

He gets no name and no description. He is another man and nothing more. He has done nothing to me. I want that stated plainly at the top, because what follows is not fair to him and I know it.

the evidence, in full

Here is everything
I actually saw.

What I saw

  • two people sitting close
  • laughing
  • talking easily
  • a hand near a hand
  • comfort

Five things. That is the whole list.

What I felt

  • replaced
  • cheated
  • forgotten
  • stupid for still caring
  • afraid I had made it all up

All of it real. None of it evidence.

Drag the line. Notice that nothing in either column changes.

Five things. Two people sitting close, laughing, talking easily, comfort.

That is the complete evidentiary record. I did not see anything else. I was not told anything else by anyone who would know.

the story I built out of it

From those five observations my mind constructed a full narrative with motivation, timeline, and a moral position for me to occupy.

Memory

I saw two people sitting close. I had heard, secondhand, that he had liked her for a long time.

Feeling

Replaced. Cheated. Forgotten. Stupid for still caring. Afraid that I had misread the entire thing from the beginning.

What I thought it meant

So it was never what I thought it was. So the psalms night meant nothing. So I had been managed.

Anger

you played me. you said forever. i was reading scripture to you at four in the morning and this is where it goes.

What I learned later

Every one of those was a feeling wearing the grammar of a fact. Read them again and notice that not one of them is a thing I observed. They are all conclusions, and the evidence they rest on is five items long.

I wrote things during this period that I have kept and will not clean up. Some of it is angry and some of it accuses someone of things I have no basis to accuse anyone of. It stays in the archive as what it is — writing done in pain, which is a real category, and not a category that gets to be evidence.

FEELINGS
ARE NOT
FACTS.

the part that was actually mine

Here is what I eventually had to admit, and it took a while.

I had said I let you go. I had said it out loud, more than once, and I had believed I meant it.

But my reaction to seeing her laugh near somebody else was not the reaction of a man who had let go. It was the reaction of a man who had filed a claim and expected it to be honoured.

Which means I had not released anything. I had loaned it.

Question

Did I want her to be happy, or did I want her to be happy in a way that still had me in it?

That question is chapter nineteen, and I did not have an answer for it for a long time.

Everyone in this story except me is unnamed — her, a friend, my father, someone. It is my story to tell and theirs to keep. Names are not hidden in the page source either; they were never written down.
