Chapter 09

One question. The answer is in the chapter before this one.

Chapter 09

Apart

Love is not the same measurement as possible.

Nothing in this chapter
is anyone's fault.

I have written this chapter several times looking for the villain, because a villain would be so much easier to hold than what actually happened.

There isn't one.

There were two families with two entirely coherent sets of expectations. There were two cultures that each had a long, considered, internally consistent answer to the question of who a person marries and what a family owes. There was religion, on both sides, load-bearing on both sides. There was secrecy, which we chose, and which cost more than we understood at the time.

And there were two people in the middle who loved each other and were nineteen and twenty and had no leverage over any of it.

what I had to learn

I genuinely believed, going in, that love was a solvent. That a sufficient quantity of it would eventually dissolve the obstacles, because that is what every story I had ever been told said would happen.

love ≠ compatibility
love ≠ permission
love ≠ timing

Those are three separate axes and you can score full marks on the first one and zero on the others, and the relationship still does not run. That is not a tragedy with a moral. That is just what it is like when a real thing meets a real structure.

Fact

We separated.

Feeling

That if I had been better — smarter, more convincing, more patient, more something — this would have gone differently.

What I learned later

That feeling is a form of grandiosity dressed up as guilt. It assumes I had enough power over the situation to have changed it. I didn't. Almost nobody ever does, at twenty.

the secrecy

One thing I will say against us both: the secrecy did real damage, and it was the one variable we actually controlled.

Keeping something hidden puts it in a room with no windows. Nothing gets in — no advice, no friction, no one's honest opinion, nobody saying have you considered. And nothing gets out either.

I have written that sentence before, in this book, about something else.

it did not end cleanly

It did not end with a scene. There was no door.

There was a decision, and then a slow decompression, and then a period of several months where the two of us were technically not in each other's lives and functionally still entirely in them.

That period does not get a chapter, because I could not tell you what happened in it. I was there and I could not tell you.

Everyone in this story except me is unnamed — her, a friend, my father, someone. It is my story to tell and theirs to keep. Names are not hidden in the page source either; they were never written down.
